Site Groundwater Monitoring and Flow Direction Assessment

SE Technologies, LLC was retained by PMAC, Ltd. to perform a site groundwater monitoring and flow direction assessment of the former Babcock & Wilcox Main Plant East Works and Wallace Run facilities located in Beaver Falls, PA. The objective of the study was to complete a site assessment program concerning potential environmental issues. The project will be completed utilizing The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Act 2 release from liabilities permit program and includes developing plans for remedial measures.

Specific tasks for the study will include the following:

drilling and sampling of soil borings
installation of monitoring wells
groundwater quality characterization
aquifer characterization
ecological and health-based risk assessment
a preliminary analysis of remedial measures
liaison with Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection

The drilling and sampling program will assist in assessing the groundwater quality and groundwater flow gradients for the site. Slug tests will be performed on the monitoring wells to help assess potential contaminant migration rate patterns. A brief ecological and health-based risk assessment will be performed to establish exposure scenarios in accordance with PADEP requirements. The risk assessment can identify specific additional needs to allow for remedial design; these needs are currently being addressed.
